(1) Unless

amending the Table— 

(i) Such a change does not apply to 

the shipment of any package filled 
prior to the effective date of the 
amendment; and 

(ii) Stocks of preprinted shipping pa-

pers and package markings may be 
continued in use, in the manner pre-
viously authorized, until depleted or 
for a one-year period, subsequent to 

the effective date of the amendment, 
whichever is less. 

(2) Except as otherwise provided in 

this section, any alteration of a ship-
ping description or associated entry 
which is listed in the § 172.101 Table 
must receive prior written approval 
from the Associate Administrator. 

(3) The proper shipping name of a 

hazardous material changed in the May 
6, 1997 final rule, in effect on October 1, 
1997, only by the addition or omission 
of the word ‘‘compressed,’’ ‘‘inhibited,’’ 
‘‘liquefied’’ or ‘‘solution’’ may continue 
to be used to comply with package 
marking requirements, until January 
1, 2003.
